Fairfield Community Primary School

Happiness and High Standards

Spring News

Friday 24th March

Meet the governor

My name is Trevor Holt. My involvement with Fairfield Primary goes back 70 years. I was a pupil when the school opened in 1954. I am proud to be a governor at Fairfield and am currently chair of the Pupil and Outcomes Sub-committee. It is always a joy to go into school. I believe the school motto: Happiness and High Standards perfectly describes the experience our children enjoy during the time they spend with us.

Away from school, I have been married to Evelyn for 53 Years. We have three children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. I love reading and watching cricket.

Governor Profile

My name is Joanne Atkins and I have been a governor at Fairfield for 3 years. I joined as a parent governor and was elected to be vice chair last year.   I have been working for the past 15 months as a Classroom Learning Assistant at Bury Church of England High School and work in the SEN department. Before that I worked as a Police Officer for GMP for 6 years. I have 2 children at Fairfield, a daughter in Year 5 and a son in Year 2 who both love their school.  I feel proud and privileged to be part of the Fairfield family and enjoy giving my time to make Fairfield the wonderful school it is, with happiness and high standards running through the heart of it.

Meet the governor

At Fairfield we have a fabulous group of governors

who support and challenge to ensure that your

children are getting the best education.   Over the

coming weeks they will introduce themselves so you

get a feel for who they are.   First to share their profile is

our Chair of Governors.

My name is Sally McGill; I live locally and many of you know me and my family.

I work as a secondary school maths teacher in neighbouring Rochdale. I have been a governor at Fairfield CP School for a decade now, and I took the chair in September 2021. To me, Fairfield is everything that a primary school should be; a warm and welcoming space that nurtures our little ones. It fills their minds with the tools for learning and guides them in their interactions with peers so that when they are bigger little ones, they are ready for the challenges of secondary education. Though my children are both now much bigger little ones, I remain proud to support our beloved Fairfield as it continues to help us raise our children in the best tradition of happiness and high standards.

 Packed lunches

Please ensure that if your child is bringing a packed lunch from home that it is has a healthy balance of foods.  We are seeing more and more sweet items creeping into lunch boxes.  The children only have 45 minutes at lunch time so sometimes can be overwhelmed by the amount of items they have to eat.  Remember children in Year Reception, 1 and 2 receive universal free school meals that can be ordered through School Grid.   Families who are in receipt of certain benefits also receive free school meals.  If you require any further information about this please contact the school office.

Online safety

The world of the internet and technology can be an incredible world but also a scary world with risks. We need to ensure that our children are fully aware of how to use technology in a safe way. The website below is a great resources for parents:

https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/

The constant changes and development of new apps etc can be overwhelming for parents and often our children can be more tech savvy than we are.  We are offering a session for parents on Tuesday 14th February at 9am and repeated at 2:30pm.  We encourage you to come along and hear some very important messages.  Please also see the attached poster about age restrictions for social media platforms-you may be surprised! Please also ensure that you have signed your child’s planner on the page relating to online safety rules.

Friday 20th January

 School day length consultation

As I shared on Parent Hub this week, the governors have reviewed any feedback from the consultation and agreed to proceed with the change to the length of the school day.  From Monday April 17th, school will end at 3:15pm.

Family Learning

The family learning sessions this half term are focussing on basic maths.  The group who attended the first one yesterday said how invaluable it was to understand how maths is taught to their children today-as it can be very different to how we were taught!  Please feel free to come along next Thursday from 1-3pm. All are welcome J

                                                           Everyday school items

Please ensure your child has a water bottle and their reading book and planner in school every day!  Also a reminder that school uniform must be worn.  On PE days, this means plain joggers/leggings, a plain white t-shirt and their school jumper/cardigan. We are seeing some non uniform items creeping in.  We do have spare jumpers/cardigans in school that we will be able to give to children if they come in non uniform on PE days.

Mystery reader

At Fairfield our passion for nurturing a love of reading is very important to us. We want all of our community to help encourage this love with our children.  We would love to welcome parents/carers/wider families to come and read to their child’s class. The idea is that you will secretly arrange with your child’s class teacher via the office to come into school near the end of a school day to read a child’s book of your choice to the children for approximately 10-15 minutes.  Your child will then get to leave with you directly from class as a little VIP.  Please drop an email to fairfield@fcpbury.com if you would be willing to come and read. The more the merrier!
